Dr. Robert D. Ellis, Ph.D. B.Sc.
Independent Product Consultant
New York City
Overview

I help people develop product - to define, build and deploy their ideas online - from academia to banking, from auction houses to financial services, from new start-up to established online business.

I do this by focusing on the practical: creating product designs and business models, designing experiences, writing software and building teams.

I engage people through contracted consultancy, coaching and mentoring. Often, I just chip in - the opportunity to work with new people on interesting problems and learn new businesses is a constant reward.

I built this page leveraging my LinkedIn profile - with the intent to visualize my career so far and work in a more graphical way for the work I can publicly describe.

Projects & Roles
I've spent most of my career developing products and delivering projects, with both direct and indirect reports. In many cases I've undertaken 2 roles: delivery manager and lead architect. As my career progressed scope evolved too - from mostly technical to a blend of business, technology and management. Each major project I have worked is represented by a card below and the icons at the base of each project card represent technologies, partnerships and other engagement such as coaching or speaking.

Skill Map
A career is a combination of different skills at different times. As careers progress the skills people acquired in education are replaced by those acquired through work and technical skills are superceded by soft and business skills. This plot leverages Sankey diagrams and the d3 visualization library to show flow and contribution of skills to positions.

In the skills diagram below, historic to present day, reads left to right and increasing color intensity represents increasing breadth and depth (maturity) of skill.

Speaking & Awards
Since I became a consultant I've tried to speak as much as possible. Mostly I speak on panels focused on helping companies leverage my expertise to solve problems I've already worked on.

Public speaking is a skill I had to work hard at - learning how to translate technical topics to a general audience - being specific and yet remaining sufficiently consumable that all levels of the audience benefit.

Flyers & Designs
I did the flyers back in 1994/5. My interest in design was sparked by having Photoshop v1 on the lab computers at university. From there I took some Saturday work with a design consultancy. They bring back many memories so I thought I would share them. The other designs are ad-hoc projects.
